Menhir de Carnac en Bretagne

Menhirs Side

7000 years old, the alignments of Carnac are world famous and remain a center of European prehistory. The singularity of megaliths of Carnac is their incredible lineup. The two main sites (Ménec and Kermario) group alone nearly 3,000 menhirs. These alignments extend over nearly four kilometers! The sites are divided into three fields of menhirs:

  • Ménec : west of Carnac, this set consists of 1,050 stones aligned to 11 files. It extends over 1 km and is the most representative set of menhirs. The site starts with a stone circle composed of 71 blocks.
  • Kermario : this set is located east of the city and is the busiest because it brings together the most impressive monoliths (more than 3 meters high for some). It has 1,029 menhirs spread over 10 lines. Admire the panorama for the summit of the Old Mill.
  • Kerlescan : the smallest and most preserved, this menhirs field consists of 13 lines where 555 stones stand.

These architectures still retain much of mystery and impress young and old. The menhirs: a stone army ... according to the legend, or rather a place of worship. Dolmens and tumulus are actually individual or collective graves. The alignments probably had a cultic role and constituted a religious site.

The access to the alignments of Carnac is free from October to March. From April to September, only paying guided tours allow you to enter inside the sites. Find out more : www.carnac.monuments-nationaux.fr

To better understand the mysteries surrounding the menhirs of Carnac, we advice you to go to the Prehistory Museum, located in the town center (open all year): www.museedecarnac.com)

Carnac from above

Village side

What makes the charm of Carnac is its authenticity. Between stone houses of granite and large villas seaside, Carnac is not a resort. Its town center has the appearance of a traditional Breton village, steeped in ancient history. It hosts one of the largest markets in the region (Wednesdays and Sundays) and a modern cultural center (exhibitions, media library, shows, concerts ...).

With a church of the seventeenth and six chapels spread throughout the town, Carnac full of heritage treasures. Over 40 km of hiking trails invite to discovery.

The natural heritage of Carnac is astonishing: Crucuny Forest, Manio Forest... The forest area of Carnac covers 20% of the town, 679 hectares of woodland. Lush vegetation, smells of the undergrowth, mosses and lichens, woody scents fill your lungs as soon as you walk into the forests with mysterious names. On foot, by bicycle or on horseback, let yourself be captivated by this unknown and unexpected side of Carnac. (Hiking Information : www.ot-carnac.fr)
